How I made $10,001 in 8 days… off ONE product!

This week something extraordinary happened… I took my own advice. Yep, teachers often teach but don’t always do. And doing is important! Last week I spent about six hours creating and launching a new product. It’s something I tell my non-fiction writing students to do all the time, yet rarely do any of them do it. Last week I created 37 checklists for writing, publishing and marketing your book. My business coach told me to create one checklist to use as a giveaway (the strategy I teach for expert author list building all the time)… so I sat down and a few hours later, 37 checklists popped out of my head. We created the product, I wrote the sales copy, my staff helped me get the webpage done and BOOM. It was ready for sale.

So what’s the secret? How did I turn a bundle of 37 checklists for authors into $10,001 in a mere 8 days? Here’s my uber-top-secret formula:

Step 1: Do something extraordinary.

The only way to get the attention of your audience through the noise they’re bombarded with every single day is to do something out of the ordinary. In late 2013, I wrote and published 18 Kindle books in 18 weeks. That was pretty extraordinary. And since it had been a while, I decided it’s time for something else unusual, so when I got the idea to create as many checklists as I could possibly crank out in a few hours on a Saturday morning, I jumped to my computer and did it.

Step 2: Take ACTION.

Joe Vitale says one thing that sets millionaires apart is when they get an idea, they ACT on it. They don’t wait around. They don’t even usually write it down. Instead, they get to a place as soon as possible where they can implement that idea. They create it, jump on it, act on it, launch it, etc., as fast as they can. Most people I know get an idea, write it in a notebook, a year later come across the notebook and say, “Wow, that was a great idea. I really should do something about that,” then move on to other things. The fact is, if you audit your time in any given day, you probably have plenty of opportunity to act on your ideas. From foregoing the latest reality show to hiring a sitter that night, if you really want to implement an idea and the passion and drive is there for it, you’ll find a way.

Step 3: Give the people what they want.

If you don’t know what your audience wants, how do you know they’ll buy your idea? I admit, I’m addicted to Shark Tank. And time and time again, I see people pitch ideas to the “Sharks” and they haven’t even paid attention to what their audience wants. They call it an unproven concept. By just opening your eyes and ears and paying attention to where your people hang out and what they’re complaining about or missing, you can fill that gap and you’ll have a winner every single time.

Step 4: Don’t make it hard!

Creating 37 checklists may overwhelm some people. But because I know a secret many others don’t utilize, it was super fast and easy. My secret? I used Microsoft PowerPoint. Honestly, until just over a year ago I’d never thought of PowerPoint for anything more than creating slides for my speaking gigs. I had no idea it was such a versatile design tool! And since I started using it to create training courses, handouts, checklists, e-book covers and more, my life has been easier, my products created faster, and my audience has been happier to get quick solutions.
